The inkberry holly is a native plant that grows from Nova Scotia to Texas. In the wild, inkberry holly is found in low-lying wet areas but do well in most soil conditions that are not consistently dry. This holly is good for mass planting, foundation planting and an informal screening or as an evergreen border. Grows well in full sun or medium shade.
There are about 400 species in the Aquifoliaceae group of plant and nearly all of them belong to the holly species. Most are evergreen trees or shrubs with several species being deciduous (lose their leaves seasonally). Most varieties have flat shiney leaves with only a few having spines such as the American holly and English holly and their hybrids.
